Ha-seong Kim, moves to Melvin SF with a different director in 2024

Kim Ha-seong’s team, the San Diego Padres, will be with a new manager in 2024.

Local media, including ‘The Athletic’, cited sources on the 25th (Korean time) and reported that coach Bob Melvin would leave San Diego to become the coach of the San Francisco Giants.

Melvin, who had one year remaining on his managerial contract with the Padres, previously obtained permission from his original team, the Padres, to conduct a managerial interview with San Francisco. After news broke that he was interviewing for a director, he quickly emerged as a strong candidate for San Francisco’s director.

According to The Athletic, Melvin met with multiple front office and team owner officials for interviews on Monday local time. This included Buster Posey, who joined the club’s board of directors following his retirement.

The possibility of Melvin going to San Francisco had been raised before.

Melvin, who won just 82 games in San Diego this season and failed to advance to the postseason, reportedly deteriorated his relationship with general manager AJ Preller to an “irreparable” level.

The Padres owner reappointed both men, but the situation was such that the two could not be together. In the end, Melvin chose to leave the team on his own by changing jobs.

Melvin, who is scheduled to enter his 21st season as a major league manager in 2024, is returning to the Bay Area, which he became familiar with after working as the manager of the Oakland Athletics for a long time.

With Melvin’s transfer, San Diego was forced to select a new coach. This will be Kim Ha-seong’s third manager in the four years he spent in San Diego.

The new coach appears likely to be promoted internally. Former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Schilt and bench coach and hitting coordinator Ryan Flaerty, who were on the coaching staff in senior advisory roles, are being mentioned as strong candidates.
