Cho Kyu-sung kisses debut season championship…Meatwillan Pajuk’s 5-game winning streak to ‘tie’ for the lead

Can Cho Kyu-sung lift the league trophy in his debut season, but Mittwylan are on a roll.

Mittwilan defeated Silkeborg 4-1 in the 16th round of the 2023-24 Danish Superliga at JYSK Stadium in Silkeborg, Denmark, at 3 a.m. ET on Monday. The win was their fifth in a row and moved them into second place with 10 wins, three draws and three losses (33 points). They are level on points with leaders Copenhagen, but are second on goal difference.

Cho Kyu-sung was named the starter for the 10th consecutive match. Against Silkeborg, the duo combined with Ola Brynhildsen. They traded goals in the first half. In the 19th minute, Sverrir Ingi Ingason scored a header off a Paulinho cross. Five minutes into first-half stoppage time, Stefan Todarsson rattled the net with a volley from Mark Brink’s cross, but Mittwylan’s advantage was short-lived as Silkeborg had a man sent off. In the 31st minute, Alexander Lind rushed into the penalty box and collided with the goalkeeper. Goalkeeper Martin Friesl was knocked unconscious and Lind was shown a red card.

In the second half, it was a goal parade for Mittwillan. He scored in the sixth minute of the second half, Henrik Dahlsgård in the 20th minute, and Francis in the 28th minute. Cho Kyu-sung didn’t score an offensive point, but he did contribute to Dahlsgår’s goal. On a corner kick, Cho’s header deflected off the goalkeeper and into the path of Dahlsgår, who slotted home the rebound.

In the full match, Cho finished with 27 touches of the ball, 73% passing success rate (11/15), 2 shots on target, 3 recoveries, 2 ground battles won (5 attempts), 5 aerial battles won (6 attempts), and 1 foul.

Mittwillan’s momentum is scary. After a slow start to the season with three wins and three losses, Mittwylan has gone on a run of seven wins, three draws, and no losses in its last 10 games. At the end of round 16, there is a three-way tie between Copenhagen (33 points), Midtjylland (33 points) and Brønnby (31 points). Copenhagen are the defending champions, having won the title last season by four points over Nordsjælland.

At this pace, they can certainly challenge for the title. Mittwylan previously won the title in 2014-15, 2017-18, and 2019-20. They’re looking to reclaim the trophy after a four-year absence, and Cho Kyu-sung is a big part of that process.
